Phases and Principles of WingTsun
The Forms
The “forms” derive from a series of fundamental natural movements that have been integrated for the purposes of self-defense and for relaxation, coordination, meditation and physical well-being.
Chi Sao ("Glued" Hands)
The WT is the only self-defense system that includes an exercise that trains proprioceptive reflexes that are determined by contact. Chi Sao reflexes are stimulated immediately and automatically by the opponent's attack. For this reason they are "tailor-made" to respond to any aggressive situation. Chi Sao reflexes are far faster than those commanded by the visual impulse.
Chi Sao is the glue that unites a series of individual movements in a coherent sequence which is not, however, rigidly "pre-established", so as to adapt to every situation and every reaction of the aggressor. Without Chi Sao, WT would be just a sum of individual techniques and "dead movements" (like most other martial arts styles). For this reason it can be said that Chi Sao is the true soul of WT.
Lat Sao (Distance application)
The purpose of WT is to develop skills in the event of aggression. In Lat Sao, the WT student learns to fearlessly confront one-on-one or multiple opponents.
BlitzReAction
Special program for particular situations in the event of attacks at very short distances.
The 5 Reaction Phases
In a real self-defense situation, the "rules of good manners" (which could alter the outcome of the encounter) do not exist! For this reason it is essential to be ready for a real confrontation, at all levels, and this is why it is necessary to be aware of the various phases of a clash.
The 5 Phases
1- Reaction phase with the feet
2- Reaction phase with your hands
3- Reaction phase with elbows and knees
4- Reaction phase with holds, anti-grab, immobilizations, controls etc.
5- Ground reaction phase
In each of the situations listed above the principles of WT can be successfully applied, and this is why many practitioners of various martial arts, once they have seen WT, begin to practice it.
“WT begins where many martial arts stop.
THE 4
PRINCIPLES OF THE WT
The WT is not the sum of individual techniques, but it is a true self-defense SYSTEM.
WT follows the aggressive defense strategy.
1. If the way is clear, move forward!
2. If the way is not clear, stick to your opponent!
3. If your opponent's strength is greater than yours, give in!
4. If your opponent backs away, follow him!
The 4
principles of “Force”
1. Free yourself from your strength!
2. Get rid of your opponent's strength!
3. Use your opponent's strength against himself!
4. Add your strength to that of your opponent!
